According to the most well-known sources, Muspelheim was one of the first two worlds to come into existence. Only one of these, Midgard, was home to humans and could be seen by them. There were nine worlds that were supported by the great World Tree, Yggdrasil, according to Scandinavian writers. In Norse cosmology, Muspelheim was a world of fire. Enemies of the gods and mankind, they would invade and burn the world at Ragnarök. Muspelheim was home to a race of fire giants, led by Surtr. Sparks from the realm of fire became the sun, moon, and stars in the sky. In the beginning of creation, the heat of Muspelheim and the ice of Niflheim had combined to create Ymir, the giant whose body was used to form the world. ![]() Following the demise of Asgard, some of its Remnants can be found all over the fiery realm and for the bravest of the braves-or foolish, the Valkyrie Queen will be patiently waiting at the Crucible.Īccording to surviving legends, Muspelheim was the primordial world of fire in the cosmology of the Norse people. Much later though, Muspelheim will play a crucial part in the story as Kratos and his son will travel there to seek the help of the legendary Surtr, in a desperate attempt to bring forth Ragnarök and put an end to Odin's reign once and for all. Visiting the fire realm will be mandatory this time as both Atreus and Thor will be dropped there on a mission to try and recover a fragment of Odin's mask. Muspelheim then returns in God of War: Ragnarök as a major location. While the fiery realm itself is really small and isn't relevant for the story, it is nevertheless useful if one wishes to test and improve his skills by trying to beat the Muspelheim Trials, at the end of which a powerful Valkyrie will be waiting as a final test. ![]() Kratos and Atreus can freely access this realm at the beginning of their journey, once they learn how to travel through Týr's Temple and as soon as they have collected enough Muspelheim Ciphers in Midgard and Alfheim. Muspelheim is introduced in God of War (2018) as an optional location. So much so that nowadays, you would find virtually no living soul in such hostile place, save the creatures and other monsters who adapted to the extreme heat. Last but not least, the idea that the Fire Giants were patiently waiting somewhere beneath its crust was no less a terryfing prospect. ![]() Not only that, the very nature of Muspelheim rightfully frightened any potential traveller, as it was the very realm from where the legendary Ragnarök would arise to bring death and destruction. Even though the realm considerably cooled since then, Muspelheim was still too incandescent with fire to allow any prospect of development, its surface was literally covered in lava and the fury of the volcanoes quickly covered the landscape with a tick layer of ashes. This might well be one of its few purposes, as ironically, while those two primordial realms provided the spark of life, they progressively fell into darkness because of the very hostility that characterized their climate. The fiery world became one of the pillars of life as its intense heat warmed up the Nine Realms through Yggdrasil, while the intensity of its fire was moderated by the cold breath of Niflheim. The place where the two realms meet-a unique feat among the Nine Realms-then became known as the Spark of the World. ![]() Long ago, this fiery realm sparked the dawn of creation of the Norse cosmology when its fire met in Ginnungagap with the ice from Niflheim, the other primordial realm. Muspelheim, also known in Old Norse as Múspellsheimr, is one of the Nine Realms of the World Tree and the homeland of the legendary Fire Giants. heads are chopped off and attached to belts. Fires burn colder, men grow old and grey. It's in the nature of things-extremes are tempered by time. I suppose it's cooled considerably since the dawn of creation, hasn't it? Niflheim isn't exactly ice these days either. the source of fire itself, and all the sun and stars, if legend is to be believed.

MbaMission: One part of the Fuqua curriculum that isn’t always readily clear to candidates is the Global Institute (GI). There’s just basically a lot of activities you’re involved in. You can consult directly for the hospital, and they only select seven students a semester. ![]() So I didn’t do FCCP, but I was still able to consult through the Duke Hospital Learning Experience Program. They put you in a team, and you can do consulting for organizations like Duke Energy or Duke Recycle. I have a friend who was a consultant for Medtronic, so it doesn’t have to be a Durham company. I didn’t do it myself, but if you join that, then you can consult for a local company or basically any company that wants Fuqua students to consult for them. There’s a program called FCCP, basically the Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum. I am doing consulting work for Duke Hospital. And you can do a lot of consulting projects here. But we’re also busy with recruiting, academics, clubs, extracurricular activities. They do that to keep constantly challenging you. I mean, it’s a good kind of busy, and a part of it is intentional, by design. and not leave until about 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. I don’t even notice the city much, because, especially the first semester, like last semester, we would often enter Fuqua at 7:00 a.m. People said, “You know, it’s crazy,” but until you experience it, you don’t really believe it. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve encountered while you’ve been at Fuqua?įFY: I didn’t know how busy it was going to be. If you live in this Fuqua community, you could share rides and stuff, but if you have access to a car, it’s more beneficial. You definitely want a car if you go to Fuqua. Most people drive, but there are people who take a bike. I guess, I think if I lived maybe five blocks closer, I might not. MbaMission: Are you close enough to campus to walk there, or do you have to drive?įFY: I drive. It’s like a little community in this corner of Durham, and we see each other all the time. So the two apartment buildings are right next to each other. Most of the Fuqua students live in either Station 9 or where I live, which is Berkshire Ninth. How do you like living in Durham?įFY: Well, I don’t love it, because the city’s really small. ![]() Fuqua sends its graduates into a lot of different industries - we see that every year. And health care is really big at Fuqua, so it’s like consulting, tech, finance, all that stuff. Did Fuqua have any other appeal to you beyond the HSM program, or was that really your primary focus?įFY: Honestly, tech is really big at Fuqua, so I also explored that for about two months, but I realized it wasn’t for me. And I really like all the professors in the program. I don’t have any other experience to compare it to, but as someone who has quite a bit of health care experience - and coming from Nashville, which is a big health care area - I just think it’s been wonderful. I did early action, and now I’m in the HSM program. ![]() And I got into Fuqua, which was the only school I actually applied to, because I wasn’t sure if I would get in. A lot of the consulting companies said I should work for a year or two more first, but I went ahead and applied anyway. I called a lot of the consulting companies, and they told me that I was really young. Actually, I didn’t really think I would get into any MBA programs when I applied. So, basically I wanted to work in a different sector in the health care industry, and I really wanted to go back to California. Right now, I’m recruiting for pharma and medical devices. I started working in health care when I was really young, and I just wanted to work in a different health care sector. MbaMission: Why did you decide to pursue an MBA in the first place?įuqua First Year: I worked for a provider in the health industry for a long time. Her enthusiasm for health care and desire to expand her career within the industry drew her to Fuqua’s Health Sector Management (HSM) program. This first-year student at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business started the MBA program with a number of years of health care experience, having entered the industry soon after graduating from Vanderbilt University. ![]() Statistically significant decreases in walking ability because of a decrease in abductor moment arm due to horizontal shortening were observed in both groups ( P=0.02, P<0.001). The average score increased from 1.8 (range, 1-3) at prefracture to 3.1 (range, 1-5) at the final follow up in 5 patients with horizontal shortening by more than 6.5 mm, and from 1.5 (range, 1-4) to 2.3 (range, 1-5) in 20 patients with horizontal shortening less than 6.5 mm. On average, walking ability decreased 1 step ( Table 2). The average score increased from 2.0 at pre-fracture to 2.9 at the final follow up. However, at the final follow up, these changed to 5, 15 and 5 cases, respectively. Using the Koval classification 20), walking ability of the patients before surgeries were as follows independent community ambulatory (grade 1 n=12), community ambulatory with cane (grade 2 n=10), household ambulatory independently or with assistive devices (n=3). Pre-fracture and final follow-up ambulatory levels were evaluated as a clinical parameter according to the Koval classiflcation 20) which grades ambulatory ability from independent community ambulatory (grade 1) to nonfunctional ambulatory (grade 7). We also examined patients to determine if other complications were present. To assess decreases in abductor moment arm, the difference in length between the healthy and unhealthy sides (horizontal shortening) was quantified by measuring the distance from medial border of the femoral head to lateral border of the greater trochanter at the final follow-up radiography visit following bone union 17) ( Fig. Nonunion was defined as: i) displacement of the fracture site by more than 1 cm without fracture union, ii) change in the angle of cannulated screws by more than 5%, iii) screw or blade back-out by more than 2 cm, or iv) femoral perforation these measurements were made at the 3-month follow-up radiography visits 19). Using radiography, union at the fracture site was checked at follow-up on a regular basis. Stable femoral neck fractures were defined as Garden types 1 and 2 according to the Garden classification 18) 16 were type 1 and 9 were type 2. The average follow-up period was 32 months (range, 12-183 months). Bone mineral density test was performed in 20 cases 16 had osteoporosis and 4 had osteopenia. The average body mass index was 22.1 kg/m 2 (range, 16.0-29.6 kg/m 2). Five of the subjects were men and the remaining 20 were women their mean age was 72.3 years (range, 65-84 years) at the time of surgery. Fractures occurred after a slip or fall accident in all but 1 case. The remaining 25 patients with a minimum follow-up of 1 year were included in this retrospective study. ![]() Of these, 6 were excluded because of death within 1 year due to underlying disease regardless of fracture surgery (n=3) or because they were not available for follow ups (n=3). Thirty-one patients were age 65 years or older and considered for this study. Eighty-five patients underwent internal fixation for femoral neck fracture from January 2008 to December 2014. We obtained the approval from institutional review board of Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center to search surgical database of our institution to identify cases for the current study. For these reasons, the optimal treatment strategy for elderly patients with stable femoral neck fractures remains unclear. Others have suggested that a postoperative decrease in abductor moment arm may reduce mobility and quality of life 17). However, some authors have reported a high re-operation rate in older patients with undisplaced fractures, because of fixation failure, avascular necrosis of the femoral head and others 13 14 15 16). Additionally, internal fixation has traditionally been the preferred method for treating incomplete fractures, stable fractures (Garden type 1) or undisplaced fractures (Garden type 2) regardless of age, and satisfactory outcomes have been achieved including relatively short operation time and joint preservation 9 10 11 12). Internal fixation is considered a better treatment choice for younger patients 7 8). Compared to internal fixation, hip arthroplasty is more commonly performed in elderly patients with displaced femoral neck fractures because of more significant improvements in pain and early ambulation, lower rates of re-operation and other advantages 4 5 6). Fracture site displacement, patient age, comorbid disorders, pre-fracture activity level are some of the critical factors in determining the clinical practice for treating femoral neck fractures 3). The incidence of femoral neck fractures, one of the leading causes of death in elderly patients is increasing as average life spans and prevalence of osteoporosis continue to rise 1 2). ![]() Note 2: "For my Linux peeps, if you have chdman installed, you can use : for cue in \*/\*.cue doĬhdman createcd -i "$.chd" done".
